MG4 Urban Topples Renault 5 to Become What Car? Best Small EV

The MG4 Urban has officially unseated the Renault 5 as the UK’s best small electric car, following a rigorous head-to-head test by What Car?.

Despite the Renault 5’s year-long reign as the class champion, the newly released MG4 Urban—available now at WLMG—has secured the top spot. The MG4 Urban impressed judges with a winning combination of class-leading practicality, superior safety ratings, and impressive real-world efficiency.

More Than Just "Urban"

While the name suggests a city-dweller, the MG4 Urban proved to be a far more substantial vehicle than its rivals, the Renault 5 and Hyundai Inster.Built on a completely new platform, the Urban is actually larger than the standard MG4, offering what What Car? described as "proper car" dimensions in a compact segment.

"The MG4 Urban just deserves the win because it's only slightly more expensive, but with that you get more equipment, a better safety rating, and it's vastly more practical." — What Car?

Space and Practicality

The MG4 Urban dominated the competition in terms of interior room. Judges found that even with a 6'3" driver, there was enough legroom in the rear for adult passengers to sit comfortably—a feat the Renault 5 struggled to match.

Practicality highlights include:

  • Cavernous Boot: A total of 577 litres of luggage space, including a clever 98-litre underfloor compartment.
  • Comfortable Cabin: Features a 12.8-inch HD touchscreen and physical buttons for air conditioning, making it as intuitive as it is spacious.

Efficiency and Real-World Range

In a 215-mile test loop from London to Oxford and back, the MG4 Urban emerged as the most efficient car in the trio. It returned an average of 3.6 miles per kWh, translating to a potential real-world range of 207 miles—surpassing both the Renault 5 (178 miles) and the Hyundai Inster (190 miles) in the same conditions.

Safety First

For families and safety-conscious buyers, the MG4 Urban provides extra peace of mind. It is the only car in this latest group test to hold a full 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating, while the Renault 5 and Hyundai Inster both secured 4-star ratings
