Changan UK has officially expanded its lineup with the debut of the Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV, a compact, electric-first plug-in hybrid SUV engineered specifically to make the transition to electric mobility seamless for UK drivers.

Joining the fully electric Deepal S05 and Deepal S07, the Ultra PHEV brings Together zero-emission daily commuting with complete long-distance freedom. Powered by a 190 kW (258 PS) combined powertrain, it achieves 0–62 mph in 7.9 seconds while delivering ultra-low running costs (139.2 mpg weighted combined WLTP; 47 g/km CO₂).

REVOLUTIONARY DRIVETRAIN: HOW IT WORKS

Unlike traditional hybrids, the Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV prioritises electric drive in virtually all driving conditions.

• Primary Electric Drive: A 172 kW permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) directly drives the front wheels, drawing power from an 18.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chosen for exceptional thermal stability and long-term durability.
• On-Board Generator: The 63 kW 1.5-litre petrol engine works alongside its own generator, creating electricity to feed the drive motor or top up the battery on the move.
• Direct Engine Engagement: A wet clutch keeps the petrol engine mechanically decoupled from the wheels during normal driving. The engine connects directly to the driveline only during full-power demand at speeds above 60 mph for a few seconds at a time, or when cruising for maximum motorway efficiency.

TAILORED DRIVING & FLEXIBLE CHARGING

Drivers can tailor energy usage via the central touchscreen using three dedicated settings:

1. EV: Prioritises battery power down to ~23% charge. A dedicated Pure EV mode forces zero-emission running.
2. Hybrid Auto: Automatically balances battery and engine usage for optimum efficiency, starting engine generation once charge drops to 15–20%.
3. Hybrid Manual: Allows the driver to set a target charge level between 30% and 80%, conserving battery energy for specific journey stages (such as low-emission city zones).

Setting a new standard for PHEV convenience, the Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV features 55 kW DC rapid charging capability—replenishing battery power from 30 to 80 per cent in approximately 15 minutes—alongside 11 kW AC charging.

Designed at Changan’s European design centre in Turin, Italy—and recipient of the prestigious German iF Design Award 2025—the S05 Ultra PHEV showcases an aerodynamic profile () featuring frameless doors, flush handles, and a 2,880 mm wheelbase that maximises cabin space.
